Abstract
My thesis explores the idea of the Japanese Rock Garden as a formal response to the traumatic relation that the nation has had with water. By looking at rock gardens as a symbolic microcosmic representation of the experience of tsunamis, my thesis investigates spaces of peace, meditation and of reflection.
